The United Nations World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually on 2 February to raise awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and planet.

Nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded. Yet, wetlands are critically important ecosystems that provide multiple values in biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater and food availability, and people’s health.

In Hong Kong, the Northern Metropolis development poses both a threat and an opportunity to the Deep Bay wetlands. A threat because 90ha. of fish ponds will be lost to the planned San Tin Technopole. At the same time an opportunity because the Government has promised to establish a Wetlands Conservation Parks (WCP) System to protect the remaining wetlands. The future values of the wetlands in the WCP System depend on how they are designed and managed.
