Sha Po Wetland Eco-Education Program

Sha Po Wetland is a restored wetland located in Kam Tin, Yuen Long. The wetland is a brackish marsh with an area of around 6 hectares. The area was a paddy field in the 1960s. It was then abandoned and dried up. The wetland was restored and revitalized in 2014. The restored Sha Po Wetland is now home to over 200 species of birds, butterflies and dragonflies, including near threatened Four-spot Midget.

The Sha Po Wetland Eco-Education Program utilizes Sha Po Wetlands as a platform to promote wetland conservation and environmental stewardship. By integrating educational initiatives with community involvement, the Program aims to nurture appreciation for wetlands and nature while fostering active participation in wetland conservation, through a diverse range of activities that blend education, science, culture, and art.

  • Community Conservation Team: Harness the power of Sha Po community in wetland conservation - habitat enhancement works (e.g. mangrove planting, weed removal, etc) and promotion of wetland conservation, thus enhance environmental awareness and sense of ownership for wetland.

  • Workshops, tours, experience days and carnivals: Diverse activities to raise participants' interest and appreciation of wetland ecology, thus awareness of wetland conservation.

  • Education corner: The community-based education corner shares ecological news and interesting information about Sha Po Wetland, its ecology, and wildlife. This initiative helps foster a strong connection between Sha Po Wetland and local residents, encouraging active community participation in conservation efforts.
